Merge Joins have been a join option for the Oracle optimizer for a very
long time. However it was rare to see them in past versions of
Oracle. Starting in 11g the cost model for has changed and Sort
Merge Joins are not costed as high as they used to be. Hence we
are seeing more Sort Merge Joins in 11g then we have in prior versions
of Oracle. Is this a good or bad thing? In this presentation
we will focus on the Sort Merge Join and explore when the Sort Merge
Join is a good way to join data together.
